Anyone who's trying to find a really great car should know that there are things to look for. Pretty colors and big engines attract a lot of buyers, but they might not be what you really need in a vehicle. If you're thinking about buying – whether it's your first car or your tenth – make sure you take the time to do some research.

If you're trading something in, don't let what's offered for your trade-in affect the car you buy, either. A reputable dealer should give you the same amount for your trade-in, no matter what car you choose to buy and in what price range.

In order to find the right car, you have to consider your price range first. No one likes to do that, because they want to buy the car they really want, not the car they can afford. If you try to buy too much car, though, you probably won't get financed. Even if you do get financing for your car-buying folly, can you make the payments?

Getting your beloved car repossessed wouldn't help anything, and it might ruin your credit enough to prevent you from getting another car for quite a while. Sticking to a realistic budget for your vehicle is the best way to make sure you get a car you love – and get to enjoy owning it for a long time.

Once you know how much you're spending, move on to what kind of vehicle you really need. That sports car with the huge motor might be a lot of fun, but will it be practical to take three kids to soccer practice? How will it handle on snowy, icy roads in the winter? Ask yourself those questions, and answer them honestly, so you don't end up regretting your purchase later.

Another good way to avoid buyers' remorse is to think about the gasoline that big engines require. Maybe it would be better to buy something with a V-6 or four-cylinder engine instead of that big, V-8 motor. You'll save a lot of money in fuel over the years you own that car or truck, and that's worth considering.

Of course, you still want to get a vehicle you like, so take the time to choose a color and body style that you'll be happy with. Just take things like engine size, gas mileage, and price into careful consideration – and if the car isn't new, be sure to have it inspected by a mechanic before you buy.
